The Lando & Ray origin story: how a viral TikTok became a pet accessories brand

It started with a TikTok. We'd been filming Lando and Ray for fun. No strategy, no content plan, just documentation of the increasingly strange dynamic between a Beaglier who thinks he's a cat and a cat who is deeply unimpressed by this. The 'POV your dog was raised by your cat' video went up without much expectation and came back with two million views and a comments section full of people who recognised their own animals in it.

That was the moment it became something.

The gap we kept seeing

With a social following came a lot of DMs asking where Lando's collar was from. And when we answered honestly, that it was from a big box pet store, it made us think. What was stopping us from buying from one of the many small brands that sell quality unique items?

The pet accessories market in Australia has a real middle-ground problem. There's the budget tier: functional but not particularly considered and often doesn't last longer than a few months. And there's the premium tier: beautiful products at prices that feel steep for something your dog is going to drag through a creek. The space between them, quality products, considered aesthetics, priced for real people, was there, but incredibly hard to find. The smaller brands we actually wanted to own, were scattered all over the place and usually required 10 pages of searching google, or just stumbling across them randomly every once in a while, to find. We wanted to create a store where you can find these amazing brands easily, in one spot!

We also noticed that most pet brands talk about their animals like mascots. Lando and Ray aren't mascots. They're the whole point. The brand emerged from them, not the other way around.

What Lando & Ray is

Australian pet accessories brand. Mid-range positioning between the big pet stores and the luxury end. Waterproof collars and leads in colourways that are designed to work with actual home interiors. Walking accessories that make the less glamorous parts of dog ownership slightly better. A curated selection of products from other small Australian brands we believe in.

Target customer: aesthetics-conscious, treats their pet as a genuine member of the household.

The talent

Lando is a Beaglier. He birdwatches, loafs, and approaches the world with the specific focus of an animal who was raised with a cat's standards and a dog's enthusiasm. He is the face of the brand because he earned it.

Ray is a Maine Coon cat. He runs the household, tolerates Lando, and appears in content only on his own schedule. He has approved the beaded collar. That's as far as the collaboration goes.

Amber and Josh appear in content occasionally, setting up videos, market days, product demos. The pets are the main characters. This is correct and will not be changing.

What's in the store

Waterproof adjustable collars and padded leads in four colourways. Silicone and letter charms for personalisation. Walking accessories including poop bag holders from Pablo & Co. Stainless steel double bowls. A croissant snuffle toy that Lando has road-tested extensively. And a small selection of gifts for the dog people in your life.

The range will grow. We're adding intentionally rather than quickly - everything that goes in has been used by us or tested by Lando. If it doesn't pass the standard, it doesn't go up.

The store is at landoandray.com. Lando is on TikTok & Instagram @landoandray. Ray is watching a bird.
